Early Childhood Education

Early Childhood Education, Evansville Indiana

The EVSC believes that educating children before the age of 5 is crucial to their later success. Approximately 47% of low-income children in our community do not receive quality early childhood education. Providing opportunities for those at-risk children by allocating resources and partnering with other agencies for the development of early childhood education centers is the core of the EVSC early childhood education initiative.

The goal of the early childhood education initiative is to add to our community's capacity to serve these children. Currently, there is a waiting list of more than 800 children wanting these programs.

Early childhood education programs that are currently active within Vanderburgh County include:
CAPE Head Start – 700 children
Carver Center – 150 children
The EVSC Special Education Preschool – 400 children

The EVSC is introducing three early childhood education centers to provide more opportunities for children, particularly for families that can't afford to access early childhood education. The new early childhood education centers will be located at:

Daniel Wertz Building – Opening Fall 2009
Culver School Building – Opening Fall 2010
North High School Building – Opening Fall 2011

Funding for the new early childhood centers will come from a variety of means including vouchers, sliding fee scales for those with the ability to pay at some level, and Title 1 grants that provide access for those who are underserved.
